Chapter Eleven

“I’m such a hypocrite.” Ivan sat at Carrie’s kitchen counter on one of her barstool chairs, shoveling a loaded tortilla chip from his Nacho Belle Grande into his mouth. “I bitched at him…made fun of him even…for eating crap, and look at me.”

Carrie shrugged as she reached across the counter and stole a chip from his tray. “Everyone gets the munchies after smoking.”

In a state of confused anger after he picked up his car from the diner parking lot, he’d headed over to Carrie’s, arriving a couple hours earlier than their planned movie night. He’d spilled his guts, rambling incoherently about everything that had happened. He told her how Tucker had kissed him the night before, and how they’d gone on the road trip that morning and had finally given each other blowjobs back at Tucker’s house.

As he explained everything, especially the part about how Tucker had gotten the video that all but cleared Ivan’s father of murder, Ivan sounded like a lunatic to himself. He’d gotten all freaked out over petty bullshit, and once again, he’d made assumptions about Tucker that weren’t necessarily true.

Carrie knew exactly how to handle the situation. She dragged Ivan out onto the patio and fired up a jay, which they shared before heading to Taco Bell. Her husband and daughter, Madison, wouldn’t be home for another hour or so, at which time family movie night would commence.

“Of course you’re not going to see everything the same way.” She licked a dollop of sour cream from her finger. “What couple does?”

“We’re not a couple. We’ll never be a couple.” Ivan carefully selected the largest, unbroken chip, which was slathered with melty nacho cheese, and shoved the entire thing into his mouth.

“Nobody’s saying you have to marry him, Ivy. But you can’t deny the man’s gorgeous. Holy shit, he’s fucking sex on legs. Can’t you at least appreciate the physical beauty? You know, you don’t have to talk politics and philosophy while fucking.”

“You’re saying I should just be his fuck buddy.”

Again, she shrugged. “What’s wrong with that? As long as you’re safe and not cheating on anyone…”

“You know what it is? It’s not that there’s anything specific about him that is over-the-top horrible. It’s not like he has some grotesque flaw that I that can’t overlook. It’s me. I can’t stop hating myself for being attracted to a guy like him.”

She laughed. “Please don’t expect me to do psycho analysis when I’m high.”

“Carrie, in many ways Tucker represents the kind of man who’s always given me shit. All the hyper masculine, gun toting men in my parent’s church—my Dad—Liam. They’re all the same. I don’t want to be involved with someone like that again. Why do I find myself attracted to men with way too much testosterone?”

“Because they’re men! You dummy. Now you know what women feel like. It’s nature. We’re attracted to the very things we hate about them. I can’t stand Bryan’s arrogance. I tell him all the time he’s being an ass, but at the same time I find his confidence sexy.
